How to fix roads: IIT-B to train BMC engineers

MUMBAI: If you idea Mumbai roads were the pits, particularly all over the rains, you are not alone. The BMC will soon spend Rs 14 lakh on a two-day refresher route on highway building and upkeep for around 50 engineers from its highway department. The route, to be performed through IIT-Bombay, is anticipated to hide the various technologies used across the nation for highway work.

The municipal commissioner gave an in-principle nod to the proposal on Friday.

BMC officers are expected to observe up on the route through learning which, if any, of the ways is feasible and best possible suited to Mumbai’s climatic prerequisites.

BMC has all the time been drawn flak for its shoddy restore and upkeep of roads. Two years ago, pothole filling combinations were introduced in from Israel and Austria. During the closing monsoon, BMC made up our minds to fabricate its own cold combine at its asphalt plant in Worli. Earlier, it would use scorching combine; as it might not resist heavy rains, it was once made up our minds to change to cold combine which will also be poured into craters even all over the monsoon.

Vinod Chithore, director of engineering products and services and projects in the BMC, stated IIT would teach highway department officers from the sub-engineer degree to assistant and executive engineers.

“Such coaching was once given to our highway department staff earlier too. However, given the change of officers in the past few years, we made up our minds to provide contemporary coaching. From new inventions to be had for the development and service of roads to the requirements for the maintenance of roads, we are hoping the route covers the whole lot,” he stated. He added that as IITs are known to work throughout states they'd have the ability to provide better viewpoint.

Aroad rip-off in the BMC had come to gentle in 2015 when civic leader Ajoy Mehta, following a letter through then mayor Snehal Ambekar, appointed a committee to probe highway repairs over the previous 3 years.
