Jind: 75.8% vote for new MLA in bypoll

CHANDIGARH/JIND: Polling for the byelection to the Jind meeting constituency clocked voter turnout of 75.77%, consistent with figures released by means of the Election Commission. A total of 1.3 lakh out of 1.72 lakh electorate exercised their franchise on Monday.

In October 2014 meeting elections, Jind had registered almost an identical number — 75.81% of the entire 1.21 lakh electorate had exercised their franchise.

There were a total 174 polling stations in the entire constituency — balloting was around 71% in urban spaces and around 85% in rural spaces. There are around 1.eight lakh votes in urban spaces and around 63,000 rural votes.

The counting of the votes would be hung on Thursday, January 31. All the digital balloting machines (EVMs) were sealed after the polling and transported to Arjun stadium in Jind city for counting.

The balloting remained peaceful as no incident of violence or even a minor scuffle was reported. Despite chilly wave within the state, massive enthusiasm was witnessed a number of the electorate. Long queues outside polling stations were noticed from 7 am until 5.30 pm.

The Jind constituency byelection is noticed as a high stakes battle for the ruling Khattar govt that fielded Krishan Midha, son of overdue INLD MLA Hari Chand Midha. The byelection was held since the two-time MLA died in August 2018. The Midha circle of relatives, alternatively, switched their loyalty to the BJP.

The Congress fielded senior chief Randeep Singh Surjewala, who's nationwide in-charge of the birthday party’s communique wing.
