VARANASI: The ongoing strike of boatmen intensified on Monday after the boatmen blocked the waterway in Ganga to protest against the cruise operator being allowed to board passenger from Assi Ghat with the exception of Khidkiya Ghat.
The strike spoiled the plans of New Year celebrations of other people visiting the ghats for boat trip and to experience New Year’s eve at the river banks.
On the fourth consecutive day of their strike on Monday, boatmen blocked the waterway in river Ganga to disrupt the cruise motion to protest against building up in issues of passenger collection for cruise operator. They met district magistrate Surendra Singh all over which the DM advised some remedial measures but failed to convince them to name off the stir.
Boatmen tied boats between both the banks of the Ganga when cruise operator have been boarding passengers at the ghats to disrupt the cruise operation. They mentioned that they would not allow the cruise to perform.
Leaders of boatmen Pramod Majhi and Shambhu Sahani mentioned following a call for participation for talks through the district management they met the DM on Monday morning.
“The DM presented many proposals for the welfare of boatmen fraternity, knowledgeable about subsidies to be given to us for converting our present diesel motor operated boats into CNG, battery or petrol fuelled engine boats. We welcomed all those proposals of the DM. However, he didn't give any written assurance against our demand of forestalling cruise operators from collecting passengers from ghats like Assi”, they mentioned.
DM mentioned, “Talks with boatmen have been sure as they welcomed all of the proposals but have been inflexible on demand of forestalling cruise from collecting passenger from other issues. Fulfilling this demand is tricky since the cruise carrier have been started after finishing all felony formalities.”
