Arumugam was once heading for hassle on Sunday evening when a site visitors constable intercepted his rushing bike at CIT Nagar. The biker was once using down the incorrect aspect and had failed to notice a truck parked along the footpath.
“Had I not stopped him, he would have rammed into the truck. He wasn’t wearing a helmet. How difficult is it for people to put on protection gears?” said the policeman who fined the errant biker.
But motorists like Arumugam are simply too many within the town. In 2018, the site visitors police booked the best possible selection of instances, 24 lakh. The division has accumulated Rs 27 crore from violators of which helmet-less riders coughed up Rs four crore. This was once adopted via fines accumulated for unlawful parking, Rs 3.3 crore, and for jumping alerts, Rs 2.nine crore.
However, the selection of instances booked for drunk driving and autorickshaws not the use of meters has been very low (see graphic).
M Radhakrishnan, founding father of Thozhan, an NGO that works on road protection within the town, said the entire figures indicated only the tip of the iceberg. “If you track CCTV cameras installed around the town, you'll be able to spot at least 70,000 violations each day. But the selection of instances booked is abysmal.”
Radhakrishnan said enforcement was once lax because the site visitors division lacks manpower. “There are around four,000 site visitors policemen within the town and more than 500 posts are lying vacant,” he said. “And when there are political occasions, constables work more than 3 shifts. Tired, they let violators cross.”
A Arun, additional commissioner of police, site visitors, said the department was once planning to introduce ‘contactless’ enforcement, the place motorists who violate rules are traced and penalized with technological help. The division is shopping high-end cameras that can zoom in on site visitors violators and registration plates. Challans will then be despatched to the violators. Such a device will convey down the workload of the pressure. Arun said parallel to crackdowns, youngsters in class should study to obey site visitors rules.
While that could ensure that the future technology would be compliant, Radhakrishnan said at the present the police have to dollar up because the selection of vehicles goes up. Till closing April, there have been 53 lakh vehicles in Chennai and the quantity would have touched 57 lakh via 2018-end, said sources within the site visitors police division.
“Unless police are better provided to observe the expanding selection of vehicles, violations will continue. In several countries, CCTV cameras trace violators and by the time they achieve house they get e-notices. We should adopt the similar device right here,” said Radhakrishnan.
