Chinna Thambi gets the better of kumkis, refuses to leave plains

Coimbatore: Efforts to chase the crop-raiding tusker Chinna Thambi away into the reserve wooded area failed for but once more on Saturday when it tried to attack a kumki, which together with its spouse in the activity, ran for his or her lives.

Chinna Thambi, which have been roaming round sugarcane fields close to Amaravathi cooperative sugar mill for the past one week, had on Friday moved to Sarkar Kannadiputhur, where it camped in an area as regards to plantain, coconut and sugarcane farms.


On Saturday morning, wooded area officers tried to chase the wild elephant, which was in a sugarcane box, away into the reserve wooded area with the help of kumkis Kaleem and Mariappan. But Chinna Thambi tried to attack Mariappan, which ran out of the sugarcane box with concern. Seeing him run, Kumki Kaleem also followed swimsuit.


Forest officers mentioned Mariappan could now not anymore be used to ward off Chinna Thambi, as the former can be now fearful of the wild elephant. “So, we have sent Mariappan to Varakaliyar elephant camp close to Topslip at night. We are now planning to bring any other kumki Suyambu on Sunday.”


When contacted, Amaravathi wooded area range officer Murugesan mentioned Chinna Thambi has moved to any other sugarcane box at Neelambur in Amaravathi wooded area range. “The elephant is roaming in the sugarcane box situated at least 15km from the reserve wooded area. Efforts to chase the animal away into the wooded area will continue.”
