Former Bihar minister sentenced to 5 years in jail

Ranchi: A special CBI court on Friday sentenced former Bihar minister Md Illiyas Hussain to five years in jail and imposed a nice of Rs 20 lakh on him in a 22-year-old bitumen rip-off case. Hussain was once the street shipping minister in the Lalu Prasad executive of unified Bihar.
Additional judicial commissioner and pass judgement on, particular CBI court, A Ok Mishra, convicted Hussain and 6 others, including executive workers, under more than a few sections of Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal Code.

The convicts had been found responsible of selling bitumen intended for building of highway in Chatra district in 1994. The bitumen siphoned off by means of the accused was once then estimated at Rs 1.57 crore. The CBI had registered a case and performed an investigation.


While delivering the judgement, the AJC sentenced transporter Dudheshwar Nath Singh to five years and imposed a nice of Rs 60 lakh on him. The then director of the street building division (RCD) Kedar Paswan, deputy director Mujtaba Ahmad, executive engineer Ramanand Ram, clerk Sobha Sinha and personal assistant Sahabuddin Beig had been awarded prison terms of five years and fined Rs 20 lakh every.


They must undergo an additional time period of six months in case of default in cost of fines. Rakesh Kumar, who appeared on behalf of the accused, said, “The court convicted them under segment 13 (1) (D) of Prevention of Corruption Act and 120 B of IPC. The transporter has been found responsible under other sections of IPC as neatly. We could be drawing near the prime court towards the judgement.”


It could also be mentioned here that the particular CBI court in Ranchi remaining September had sentenced Illiyas Hussain to 4 years’ rigorous imprisonment in reference to every other bitumen rip-off (RC-Four(A)/97-R) that came about in the mid 1990s. This case is related to supply of bitumen to the street building division in Gumla district. The CBI had filed several FIRs in 1997 following the direction of the Patna High Court. Subsequently Hussain, an RJD MLA, was once disqualified from the club of the Bihar legislative assembly in November 2018.
