Navi Mum: Trader held for Rs 8cr duty evasion

NAVI MUMBAI: A resident of Wadala Bhakti Park has been arrested by means of the Customs Unit of Jawaharlal Nehru Custom House in Uran allegedly for evasion of round Rs eight crore responsibility and tax whilst importing silicone sealants and adhesive tapes from China over four years. He has been charged for undervaluing imported items, misdeclarating amount and misclassifying items to steer clear of GST by means of faking invoices. He has been despatched to 14 days in custody.

Customs officials said a firm associated with the accused, Hojefa Officewala, 47, is accused of hiding the original invoice and submitting fake invoices quoting prices Three-Four instances lower than unique prices.


Though bills for imports worth as regards to Rs 20 crore had been made through bank, the real price of imports would be over Rs 80 crore within the remaining four years, officials said, including that the firm will have paid the balance through hawala.


Besides other charges, Customs officials said that the accused misclassified items to evade 10% of Integrated Goods & Services Tax by means of entering a classification quantity is meant for items that draw in lesser tax.


Deputy commissioner of Customs Special Intelligence and Investigation Branch Abhaysinh Phalake confirmed the arrest. He said Officewala has been charged below segment 135 of the Customs Act that attracts a maximum punishment of seven years and penalty.
