SAD leader, biker die in SUV crash

MOHALI: A Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader died after the SUV he was travelling in grew to become turtle following a tyre burst on Chandigarh-Ambala highway, near Lalru, on Thursday night time. The crash claimed the lifetime of a biker, too, and left two others — the SAD leader’s spouse and driver — injured round four.30pm.

Police said Mohali (city) district president Baljeet Singh Kumbra, 65, was going to Shahabad, Haryana, to perform the closing rites of a relative. While Kumbra was sitting on the passenger seat, his spouse — Rajinder Kaur, 64, councillor from ward 46 — was on the rear seat. “The SUV was plying on the highway and the bike on the slip street. Both were going against Ambala. The SUV’s front, left tyre burst when it reached near a playground in Lalru. As the motive force — Tarsem Singh, 53 — lost keep an eye on of the vehicle, it broke the road divider and overturned on the biker — Sakti Singh, 23, a resident of Ambala,” said a cop.



Passers-by known as up an ambulance that took Kumbra, his spouse and driver to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. The biker, who labored in Chandigarh, was rushed to Derabassi civil medical institution, the place he was declared introduced dead. “While Kumbra succumbed, his spouse and driver were referred to a private medical institution in Sector 62, Mohali. Their condition is stated to be important,” said investigating officer Satinder Singh of Lalru police station.


Sukhdev Singh, ward 47 councillor, said, “Kumbra was a good and hard-working guy. He was at all times ready to help citizens.”


Derabassi MLA NK Sharma and other leaders condoled Kumbra’s demise.
