MOHALI: For the primary time, transgenders will cast their votes throughout the coming near near parliamentary elections in the state. This time, 23 transgenders were registered as electorate in the Mohali district. This was stated through deputy commissioner Gurpreet Kaur Sapra.
Sapra mentioned throughout the last Assembly as well as parliamentary elections, not one of the transgender had enrolled as electorate in Mohali.
She mentioned: "This year, 23 transgenders have got registered as voters in Mohali. We have been in constant touch with the heads of the transgender community and they have been telling us that all the transgenders have their voter IDs in Chandigarh, but this year we have been able to trace 23 such transgenders who are living in Mohali and have their votes here. On the other hand, another special category of disabled persons have also been on the priority list for special treatment during the elections. In Mohali, we have registered 2,543 disabled voters this year and we are hopeful of enrolling more."
She mentioned both those classes could be supplied special preparations and treatment in order that they come forward to cast their votes.
In all, Mohali had 6,89,823 registered electorate in the district through January 31, 2019.
Of those, 3,63,450 are male electorate and three,26,450 are female electorate.
Sapra mentioned: "We have been able to register 10,541 new voters this year and the electoral registration officer (ERO) has been directed to enroll more young voters." The DC mentioned she could be soon cling meetings with the representatives of the political events and provides them guidelines as issued through the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).
