‘Being Parrikar’s teacher has become my second identity’

Bhubaneswar: Prashant Kumar Patnaik, 77, trainer of former defence minister and Goa leader minister late Manohar Parrikar, on Monday recollected memories of Parrikar’s IIT Bombay days. He taught the senior BJP leader from 1975 to 1978 when the latter used to be pursuing his B Tech in metallurgical engineering in IIT Bombay.
Patnaik used to be all praise for his student’s honesty and simple living. “I cannot fail to remember Parrikar’s admire and affection against me when he paid a talk over with to my Bhubaneswar place of abode on June 26, 2016. Hundreds of other people had queued outside my domestic to have a glimpse of the then defence minister. I think proud that folks, including our milkman, consider me as trainer of Parrikar. It has change into my 2nd identification,” he added.

The BJP leader had eaten samosa and home-made cake at Patnaik’s place of abode. “He used to be a very humble particular person,” the retired IIT professor mentioned.

Reminiscing about a candid moment with Parrikar in his laboratory in 1978, Patnaik mentioned, “I had warned every student of my elegance to wear sneakers while getting into my laboratory as a security measure. One day, Parrikar had entered the lab dressed in a sandal. I did not allow him in. He went again to the hostel and returned after dressed in sneakers,” he added.

After he became Goa leader minister in October 2000, Parrikar had visited Patnaik’s IIT Bombay team of workers quarters once. “While getting into our team of workers quarters on the campus, he had sought my permission to go into my room identical to he used to do while getting into the laboratory in school. When Patnaik known as him, Parrikar immediately mentioned he had placed on his sneakers. We had a hearty chuckle over the topic. I am getting emotional when I consider his phrases,” Patnaik mentioned.

Parrikar used to be identified for his management skills. As the mess secretary of the hostel in IIT Bombay, he had fought for mess staff as a result of they have been getting wages for 8 months most effective not like other employees. He took up the topic with the authorities involved and solved the problem in spite of everything. Later the mess staff won salaries for 12 months. “He used to be a tight, organised and disciplined student with management skills,” the teacher mentioned.

A disciplinarian, Patnaik joined IIT Bombay in 1969 as a faculty member in the department of metallurgy engineering and materials science. This Dhenkanal local had retired in June 2004. Like Parrikar, he is also an IIT Bombay alumnus. He used to be educating iron and metal making in metallurgy engineering.

“Parrikar used to be truthful in giving answers. He would merely rise up and say that he could no longer understand the speculation or some parts of a chapter,” Patnaik recalled.
