Fresh face for North Goa, experience for South: Congress strategy for Lok Sabha polls

PANAJI: After a protracted delay, Congress on Monday picked president of the state unit Girish Chodankar and former chief minister Francisco Sardinha for the North Goa and South Goa Lok Sabha constituencies respectively. The names have been cleared via the Congress central election committee headed via Congress national president Rahul Gandhi on Monday night.

While Chodankar’s identify used to be showed earlier, the birthday party struggled with the decision for South Goa until Monday. Sources mentioned Congress ladies’s wing president Pratima Coutinho used to be a powerful contender for the price ticket and senior birthday party functionaries had a hard time settling on the candidate. The selection used to be between a brand new face and an experienced one.

Youth Congress subsidized Pratima, seniors vouched for Sardinha

Sardinha, a five-term MLA, used to be first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1998.

He used to be re-elected to the 14th Lok Sabha in a by-election in November, 2007 after incumbent Churchill Alemao resigned to contest meeting elections.

Sardinha used to be re-elected in 2009, however in 2014, Congress not noted him and opted for Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco.

This would be the first parliamentary election for Chodankar. The former state Youth Congress president and former AICC national in-charge of NSUI had contested, although unsuccessfully, towards former chief minister Manohar Parrikar within the 2017 bypoll for the Panaji meeting seat.

According to Congress insiders, Chodankar would have preferred to contest the Lok Sabha election from South Goa, a constituency which has predominantly been with Congress. However, birthday party top command is of the opinion that if Chodankar contests the elections from North Goa, the birthday party may have a shot at successful both the seats.

In 2014, BJP won both the Lok Sabha seats in Goa via maintaining the North Goa seat for the fourth time, whilst wresting Congress’ South Goa bastion.

Initially, Congress used to be slated to declare the candidates for the bypolls and two Lok Sabha seats on March 19, however following the loss of life of chief minister Manohar Parrikar, it delayed the announcement. The birthday party also gave the look to be in two minds concerning the candidates for South Goa with Youth Congress employees supporting Coutinho, whilst senior birthday party males vouched for Sardinha’s talent to connect with contributors from all communities in rural parts of Goa.

Lawyer Cleofato Coutinho who had the backing of former chief minister Digambar Kamat, used to be also a powerful contender for the South Goa price ticket.
