In Gautam Budh Nagar, only five Independents in poll fray this time

GREATER NOIDA: There are fewer Independents contesting from Gautam Budh Nagar constituency this time in comparison to earlier normal elections. While there have been 12 and nine Independent candidates in the 2009 and 2014 Lok Sabha polls, respectively, the number in 2019 is down to 5.
Former candidates attribute this to a number of causes, including rejection of candidature, loss of price range and “complex” nomination forms. This time, the EC has added any other requirement in the form — details of source of revenue tax in the past 5 years. The modification in the Conduct of Election (Amendment) Rules 2019, notified via the ministry of legislation and justice in February, has changed the layout of Form 26.

Previously, a candidate needed to only declare the ultimate IT return (for self, partner and dependents) in Form 26 however in the amended form, 5 years’ returns wish to be furnished, at the side of details of offshore assets.

In the 2017 Assembly elections, there have been 11 candidates in the fray for four out of 5 districts in the Gautam Budh Nagar parliamentary constituency. While Sikandrabad did not have any Independent candidate, Dadri had six, Noida and Jewar two every and Khurja one.


Vimlesh Sharma, a social employee who contested that election, said 17 nomination forms were rejected via the EC. “Candidates are demotivated. Last time, we complained to EC however no action was once taken,” she said, including, “Anyone with a blank symbol gained’t be able to have the funds for the amount of money required to be spent in a Lok Sabha election campaign.”


Anoop Khanna, an activist who runs the initiative Dadi ki Rasoi, instructed IdealNews rejection of nominations ends up in suspicion that candidates who can have an effect on votes of heavyweight candidates are deliberately discouraged. “No time is given to record an attraction.
