LUCKNOW: Thousands of labourers, most commonly Muslims and Dalits, who had misplaced their livelihood since UP govt ordered the close down of about 300 tanneries along the Ganga in Kanpur and Unnao for nearly three months during the Kumbh Mela, will have to look ahead to some extra time earlier than they return to their offices.
While the state urban development department, which supervised the Kumbh, had advisable the reopening of tanneries previous this month, the order was once later stalled, looking for environmental approval. Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) chairman JPS Rathore showed that tanneries would have to look ahead to some extra time to reopen and it could be two to a few months earlier than UPPCB will get the inquiry file.
"We cannot ignore the issue of Ganga pollution as we have to ensure clean and continuous flow of water. Hence, reports are being sought from the ground level on whether the tanneries are fulfilling minimum standards in treating discharge," stated Rathore.
"We are not in favour of closing down industries but environment clearances are required before we order reopening," added Rathore.
