Sabarimala gag order could render BJP speechless

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The advisory of the state’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Teeka Ram Meena against the usage of the Sabarimala issue for election marketing campaign has come as a huge shock for the BJP, which wanted to spotlight it as its primary marketing campaign point.

Responding to the Election Commission’s instruction, BJP former state president Kummanam Rajasekharan informed journalists in New Delhi that Sabarimala was no longer a religious issue and nobody can stop discussing the issue as a part of the election. “None can stop discussions on Sabarimala. It’s no longer a religious issue. It’s quite a human rights violation. Also, it is as much as the Central Election Commission to come to a decision on such issues,” Rajasekharan said.

BJP state common secretary Okay Surendran too said the electoral officer’s directive was unacceptable. “The election fee can't direct against discussing Sabarimala issue in the election. It’s the process of political events to come to a decision at the marketing campaign topic. Nobody has the fitting to say that Sabarimala issue must no longer be discussed in the election. Electoral officers must higher focus on measures to forestall bogus vote casting,” Surendran said.

The birthday celebration spokesperson B Gopalakrishnan said the words of the manager electoral officer feels like that of the state government. “Sabarimala is a political and cultural issue. There isn't any query of Sabarimala fanning religious hatred. Where is this sort of possibility since devotees belonging to all religious denominations are free to seek advice from the temple? Sabarimala is certainly a major issue to be discussed in the election and there cannot be a blanket ban at the identical,” he said.

The BJP chief said that there was no logic in the leader electoral officer’s argument that a explicit issue, which made deep affect in the minds of a giant phase of electorate, must no longer be some degree of discussion. Issuing diktat against discussions on a single issue is different from that of the typical ideas that warrant motion against attempts to flare up communal stress, he added.

Meanwhile, LDF convener A Vijayaraghavan said the election fee has issued the fitting directive. “Since Supreme Court is a constitutional body and it has proclaimed a verdict nobody can query. The election fee has best echoed this sentiment. There is nothing wrong in it,” he said.

Congress leaders, who are busy with the method of finalizing the birthday celebration applicants in New Delhi, said that they are going to react after learning the CEO’s instruction.

Meanwhile, Kanakadurga, some of the women who entered the temple following the SC verdict, said that political events must discuss the issues without delay associated with electorate. “BJP’s move to make the Sabarimala issue a first-rate ballot marketing campaign issue is suggesting that they've nothing else to spotlight,” she said.
