Sparks disrupt Metro services at Dum Dum stn

KOLKATA: Sparks and smoke from the third rail stalled Metro services and products over again — for the fourth time since December — during the peak hours at Dum Dum station on Thursday morning, inconveniencing loads of passengers for round one and a half hours. A fault in the cable supplying energy to the third rail was to blame for Thursday’s disruption.

“At 8.25am, when a Kavi Subhas-bound educate was approaching Dum Dum station from Noapara, station workforce spotted sparks and smoke from the third rail. As a precautionary measure, the educate was stopped round 30 metres from the platform. As the reason for the sparks had to be ascertained and this might only be achieved after switching off energy to the third rail, a call was taken to evacuate passengers. There had been only some of them at the educate and they walked up to the station alongside a ramp, escorted via Railway Protection Force (RPF) group of workers and station workforce,” Metro Railway CPRO Indrani Banerjee stated.

While there have been only some passengers at the educate, several loads had been waiting at Dum Dum station to board it. There was considerable disgruntlement when those passengers had been requested to depart as it will take some time for traditional services and products to resume. Truncated services and products persisted between Girish Park and Kavi Subhas. Passengers weren’t amused via the lengthen and lots of wanted to grasp why the Metro faces disruptions so continuously. “Either the rakes falter or there's something improper with the third rail. Maybe, the Metro must cross in for a complete overhaul. After all, our entire schedules cross haywire when such disruptions happen,” stated Rajesh Agrawal, who planned to shuttle to the Central station.

Normal services and products resumed at nine.49am after the issue was rectified and Metro claimed that there was no purpose for panic. “There was nothing improper with the rake. Our workforce noticed the sparks and stopped the educate. There was a fault with the cable that provides energy to the third rail,” stated Satyaki Nath, most important leader operations manager, Metro Railway.

Even when things seem to be looking up for the Metro with new rakes coming in, officials are interested by such incidents. One of them pointed out that it will make little difference to passengers if the brand new rakes continue to get stuck due to issues in the third rail or in other places in the device.

On December 27, a hearth had broken out underneath a trainer close to the Maidan Metro station. A month later, on January 31, smoke emitted from underneath a trainer of a Kavi Subhas-bound rake quickly after it reached Dum Dum. Again on February 26, an identical sparks had been spotted from the third rail close to Mahanayak Uttam Kumar station and services and products had been disrupted for over 30 mins.
