Varsity honour for Jharkhand governor Droupadi Murmu

BHUBANESWAR: Jharkhand governor Droupadi Murmu gained doctor of literature (honoris causa) from her alma mater Rama Devi Womens’ University (in the past Rama Devi Womens’ College) at the instance of the establishment’s first convocation right here on Saturday. Odisha governor Ganeshi Lal, who may be chancellor of the university, handed over the certificate of honorary degree to Murmu.

Murmu, 60, from Uperbeda village in Kusumi block of Mayurbhanj district, completed her commencement in 1978-79 from the establishment. She was a government servant ahead of entering politics in 1997. She was two-time MLA from Rairangpur assembly seat between 2000 and 2009 and served Odisha as a minister from 2000 to 2004.


Murmu, who belongs to a Santal tribal circle of relatives, is the first Odia girl to change into governor of a state.
