Stop my tour, get jail & fine, warns Governor

CHENNAI: In a brand new twist to the continued tussle between Tamil Nadu governor Banwarilal Purohit and the opposition events led by the DMK over his box visits to the districts to check govt departments, Raj Bhavan has threatened “imprisonment” of the ones fighting the governor from exercising his powers vested under the Constitution. The governor will proceed to undertake such visits to the districts in long run too, Raj Bhavan stated in a commentary on Sunday.

A commentary from Raj Bhavan on Sunday reiterated that the “place of business of the governor” is secure under IPC Section 124. “Attempts to restrain the governor from exercising any of the lawful powers by the use of criminal pressure or makes an attempt to overawe such governor, will be punished with imprisonment of as much as seven years, and a fantastic,” the commentary stated.

Hitting again strongly on the threatening tone of the Raj Bhavan’s commentary, DMK working president M K Stalin charged the governor with “indulging in direct politics” and condemned the specter of imprisonment.

“The DMK is towards such visits by the governor to check functioning of the government departments, since it's an attempt at parallel governance. The DMK will proceed to carry black flag demonstrations in its efforts to safeguard the interests of the states,” Stalin stated. The Raj Bhavan missive came in the wake of the black flag demonstration held by the DMK cadres at Namakkal throughout governor’s visit on Friday. Several DMK partymen had been taken into custody. Protesting the arrests, DMK working president M K Stalin on Saturday led a protest march towards Raj Bhavan to put siege to the governor’s place of dwelling. Stalin, several DMK leaders and partymen and girls had been taken into custody and had been later let off.

The institution of the governor is that of a Constitutional authority who enjoys complete authority and freedom to visit any a part of the state. Being the head of the manager, he enjoys unhindered freedom to meet and engage with officials of the state. “In no case to this point has there been an example of the governor criticizing the performance of any division or of giving a course to any professional, the commentary stated. “He (Stalin) is either ignorant of the legislation or attempting to overawe by threatening to besiege Raj Bhavan or block the roads resulting in the Raj Bhavan,” the commentary stated.

In his counter argument, Stalin pointed out that such evaluations by the governor is not happening in different BJP dominated states or where a powerful regional birthday party is in power like Madhya Pradesh or West Bengal. “Even in Tamil Nadu such evaluations had now not taken place previously. The Edappadi K Palaniswami govt may not have the need to oppose this, given their tendency to bow ahead of the Raj Bhavan and the BJP govt on the Centre. But, DMK being a powerful willed birthday party and combating to safeguard the rights of the states under the federal machine, will proceed to oppose such visits within the democratically permitted norms of protests,” Stalin stated.

Meanwhile, the Guindy police on Sunday registered a case towards Stalin and different birthday party employees pertaining to their agitation towards the governor. Stalin has been booked under IPC Sections 143 (unlawful assembly) and188 (Disobedience to reserve duly promulgated by public servant).
