Gunshot at Modi's rally in Thiruvananthapuram creates panic

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A police officer’s bid to transparent the breechblock of his sidearm created panic among BJP workers at Central Stadium simply ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival on Thursday.

The administrative center fired his pistol as per set procedure after the pistol’s breechblock (a firearm phase that closes the breech) got stuck.


He used to be testing the sidearm outdoor a short lived VIP washroom set up at the back of the level. Hearing the gunshot, the crowd panicked. People assumed that the gun had fired accidentally.


Police said armed workforce in and across the venue as asked by means of the Prime Minister’s security element.


‘’The officer cocked the pistol issued to him and its breechblock got stuck. It can also be unblocked only by means of firing it,” town police commissioner Okay Sanjay Kumar Gurudin said. The stuck firearm could be fired either inside of a bullet lure (a metallic box used to stop bullets) or by means of pointing the gun at a protected zone. The officer opted for the second one underneath the supervision of a sub-inspector in charge of the armoury, he said.


The officer, connected to the armed reserve police camp, Kollam, used to be removed from responsibility after the incident.
