US takes step toward listing giraffes as threatened species

WASHINGTON The Trump management has taken a primary step towards extending protections for giraffes beneath the Endangered Species Act. The transfer comes after legal power from environmental groups.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service says its preliminary assessment has decided there's "substantial knowledge that listing is also warranted'' for giraffes.


The formal discovering to be published in the Federal Register will begin a better assessment and public remark process. That could result in import restrictions on hunting trophies and frame parts from giraffes, including skins and hides.


Biologists have warned for years that the world's tallest land mammal is at increasing chance of extinction from habitat loss, poaching and different threats.


The wild giraffe population in Africa has declined through just about 40 % in simply 30 years.
