India's oil imports from Iran down 57% in April

NEW DELHI: India’s oil imports from Iran fell about 57 in step with cent year-on-year in April, consistent with tanker arrival data seen by Reuters, the final month when New Delhi was allowed to load Iranian oil ahead of US sanctions preventing purchases of oil from the Opec member.

India, Iran’s best oil client after China, shipped in about 277,600 barrels in step with day (bpd) of oil from Tehran in April, down about 31.5 in step with cent from the previous month, initial tanker arrival data from shipping and business assets showed.

The United States offered sanctions in November but gave a six-month waiver to 8 countries, including India, which allowed them to import some Iranian oil.

India prepared to care for impact of end of waivers from US sanctions on import of Iranian oil: MEA

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said India was prepared to care for the impact of the US resolution. "There will be additional supplies from other major oil producing countries based on our robust plan drawn up by the Ministry of Petroleum," said Kumar at a media briefing.

India was allowed to buy an average 300,000 bpd of oil throughout November-April, but exact volumes varied from month to month due to lack of ships after international shipping strains sponsored out of Iranian offers beneath pressure from US sanctions.

In April, Washington asked patrons of Iranian oil, mostly in Asia, to halt purchases or face sanctions.

India is scheduled to get two very huge crude carriers carrying four million barrels of Iranian oil this month - one each at Paradip within the east and Kochi within the west. The two vessels were loaded in April.

Since November, when India received the sanctions waiver, only state-run Indian Oil Corp, Bharat Petroleum Corp, Hindustan Petroleum and Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals were purchasing Iranian oil.

India’s total imports from Iran in January to April 2019 fell just about 45 in step with cent to 304,500 bpd compared with 552,000 bpd a 12 months ago, the information showed.

The assets declined to be recognized as they were not accredited to speak with media.
