BELAGAVI: City traffic police started cracking the whip on autorickshaws ferrying schoolchildren more than a stipulated number. The initiative was once started following several complaints from folks.
On Thursday, city traffic police stuck 81 vehicles at other colleges whilst the drivers had been shedding kids. The auto drivers had been booked underneath the Motor Vehicles Act for ferrying more than six kids. According to the Act, vehicles can fetch a most six students at a time and crossing this limit is a punishable offence.
City police commissioner DC Rajappa informed TOI that police gained several complaints from folks about autorickshaws ferrying more kids. "Autos are fully packed with kids and school bags are hung on the vehicle's side. Besides, younger students are made to sit on the laps of elder students. This is unsafe and we can't entertain it," he mentioned.
The officer mentioned he has asked traffic police to continue the power against such vehicles including that in a while a gathering with auto rickshaw associations could be held to inform drivers concerning the laws on ferrying schoolchildren. According to Rajappa, some school vans are also carrying kids past permissible limits and notices could be issued to such colleges.
Rajappa added that it is is also the responsibility of parents to ensure the safety in their wards.
