KOLKATA: Three days ago, six-month-old Taufiq Mullik was once rushed from Murshidabad to Kolkata with a nail caught in his windpipe. On the eve of Eid, docs removed the two-and-a-half-inch nail thru a rigid bronchoscopy — a non-surgical process — and despatched the newborn home.
In the afternoon on June 13, Taufiq’s uncle Alauddin Shiekh heard him crying. He noticed froth across the child’s mouth that had streaks of blood in it. Panicking, he immediately alerted different members of the family.
When they discovered that one thing was once caught in Taufiq’s throat, his grandmother attempted to extract the nail along with her hands. But she drove it deeper. The circle of relatives then decided to take him to a health center.
After alleged refusals via five hospitals, together with 4 executive set-ups, the boy was once in any case admitted in AMRI Hospital Mukundapur around 5pm on June 14, nearly 36 hours after he swallowed the nail. “The child was once coughing and was once in nice breathing misery. He was once immediately wheeled into the operation theatre,” stated Dr Bichitrabhanu Sarkar, paediatric intensivist at AMRI Mukundapur.
By then the nail had travelled down the trachea and was once lodged in the fitting bronchus. Fortunately, it had now not led to any significant perforation. “We extracted the nail using an endoscope thru a process called rigid bronchoscopy. The most tricky factor was once giving anaesthesia to an toddler with a compromised airway,” stated Dr Anindya Chattopadhyay, advisor paediatric surgeon.
Doctors stated if the nail had stayed in longer, it would have led to death. Taufiq was once kept in the PICU through the night. Though docs sought after to keep him for any other day, his parents sought after to return home for Eid. Doctors agreed to discharge him on Friday after reviewing Taufiq’s parameters.
