COIMBATORE: Considering the unconventional protests that farmers have staged within the last couple of years to draw the government’s consideration to their calls for, iconic farmer leader C Narayanasamy had been a front-runner. He no longer simply fought for farmers’ rights, but in addition made positive the government deliver them.
To honour the veteran leader, the state executive has constructed a memorial hall on a 30-cent land at Vaiyampalayam within the district at the price of Rs 1.75crore. Chief minister Edapadi K Palaniswami will inaugurate it on February 6.

To convey farmers’ problems to the awareness of the government, a small associationKovai Northern Part Farmers Associationwas formed with simply six contributors in 1966. “It later was the Coimbatore District Farmers Association,” Balusami stated. “One of Narayanasamy’s main calls for was free electrical energy to farmers as the government had higher energy tariff from nine paisa to 12 paisa in step with unit in 1972. Upon failing to pay the tariff, the electrical energy board officers would disconnect energy provide and the crops would wither due to lack of water. Many farmers bore massive losses. Whenever farmers protested, police would lathicharge the protesters and arrest the frontline leaders. During the mid-70s, over 5,000 farmers were lodged in prison. To convey them out, farmers with their bullock carts entered the town from each side and parked them for 32 hours, leaving no house for motor vehicles,” he advised TOI.
“But Narayanasamy rebuked the protesting farmers for inflicting inconvenience to the people. Even though he was against violence, over 47 farmers, who participated within the protests, were killed in police firing between 1970 and 1980,” Balusami recalled.
Even when the state had powerful and charismatic leaders, Narayanasamy attracted even the farmers belonging to the political parties as he fought if truth be told for their welfare, stated P Chinnikrishnaiah, an advocate, who worked with the deceased leader. “It was basically because of the lathicharge and firing during the protests, he determined to start out a political birthday celebration. He concept it might give farmers a forum to precise their grievances.”
