2 months on, govt yet to find cause of 40 deaths in Yavatmal

NAGPUR: Nearly two months have passed but the actual reason for demise of the 40 farmers and farm labourers is yet to be ascertained.

Though initial reports of the publish mortem of those patients point out poisoning because of organo-phosphorus compounds, there's no conclusive proof as the blood samples as smartly the viscera reports from the Amravati Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) are still awaited.

Vijay Thakre from the FSL claimed that he had sent reports of 27 blood samples and 4 visceras on Wednesday to the Yavatmal police. However, DCP Raj Kumar advised TOI that he had now not won any reports yet. "There is no point in withholding such information. I would share the information as soon I get it," said Kumar.

The performing dean of the Government Medical College and Hospital in Yavatmal, Dr Manish Shirigiriwar too said that the hospital had now not were given any reports yet either of the blood samples or the viscera from FSL (Amravati) or AIIMS (New Delhi).

Dr Satish Pawar, Maharashtra director of well being products and services, is blaming the pesticide manufacturers for now not providing antidotes with the chemical substances. "As per the Insecticide Act, it is the responsibility of the manufacturer to provide the antidote for treatment if there is accidental poisoning. They should be held responsible for these deaths," he said.

The deputy director of well being products and services, Akola circle, Dr Nitin Ambadekar said that SIT might be holding its assembly on October 25 and simplest after that may he be able to share any result of the reports. "We have already started educating the farmers about proper use of pesticides, precautionary measures etc," he said.

The chairman of the Vasantrao Naik Shetkari Swablamban Mission (VNSSM) Kishor Tiwari sees the problem another way. He says that since there is only one antidote to be had in the type of atropine, it's being used on all patients. "Now whether this is working or not is not clear. Patients are dying due to convulsions, cardiac failure. Who knows the treatment is right or not," he said.

Tiwari said that the state government has simplest stopped sale of two pesticides — 'Polo' and 'Police' — and is thinking of preventing sale of some other five. "But it has not banned any pesticide yet. Isn't it mockery of the system," he asked.


The VNSSM chief says he would make sure that everyone guilty in the agriculture division, well being division and above all of the producer and dealers are punished. "Farmers' lives cannot be cheaper than the lives of anyone else in this country. Most of those dead were innocent and illiterate tribal labourers," said Tiwari.


26 still admitted in Yavatmal hospital


While no fresh deaths had been reported from any of the medical colleges in Vidarbha because of pesticide spraying, the Government Medical College and Hospital in Yavatmal still has 26 admitted patients. Six of those are essential and one is on ventilator. The general demise toll because of contact poisoning in Vidarbha is 40. So some distance 13 patients have died in Yavatmal GMCH.


There aren't any admitted patients at Chandrapur GMCH while there are two patients underneath treatment at Akola GMCH. The Yavatmal GMCH has admitted 472 patients of pesticide spraying poisoning since July.
