On the run since the 1970s, Chambal ‘dacoit’ finally falls into police trap

JAIPUR: Rajasthan police claim to have arrested a dacoit who was lively in the ravines of Chambal in the overdue 1970s and kept away from arrest for just about 40 years.

Narayan Singh, who was stated to be a member of one of the feared gangs in areas round Dholpur, Bharatpur, Agra and ravines of Madhya Pradesh, had two circumstances of dacoities registered against him in 1977. He was 23 then. Now, when the law has caught up with him, he is 63.


Police stated Singh has confessed that he took up atypical works as a day-to-day wage labourer in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi between 1977 and 1987. "He later got a job of a security guard with department of archeology at Delhi and worked there till his retirement. It seems that his employers did not verify his antecedents properly before offering him the job," stated a police officer.


Singh was not too long ago caught all over a distinct pressure of Rajasthan police to nab proclaimed offenders against whom there have been status warrants pending for lengthy. During the pressure, the police managed to arrest almost 50 such proclaimed offenders and Singh was one in all them.


"When we started gathering information about Singh, our sources in his village near Dholpur told us that he was living in Agra," stated Vijay Singh, SHO of Kumher police station in Bharatpur. "We constituted a team and managed to get some more information about his relatives. The team posed as Narayan's distant relatives, used the local dialect and some family references to collect some vital information him. He was finally arrested on August 23."


The police launched the details of 50 such proclaimed offenders on Saturday who had been arrested all over the special pressure.
