Bengaluru hospital conducts free, subsidised BMT, saves 50 thalassemic children

BENGALURU: A city-based health center, operating together with two non-profit organisations in opposition to curing all Thalassemia-afflicted youngsters in the country, achieved a milestone on Sunday by means of saving lives of 50 youngsters suffering from Thalassemia over a length of just two years.


Under its initiative with Sankalp India Foundation and Cure2Children of People Tree Hospitals stored the lives of 50 youngsters thru successful bone marrow transplants (BMT), performed both at loose or a minimum price.


Dr Supraja Chandrashekar, lead paediatrician at People Tree Hospitals, said, "Thalassemia is a disease that requires a child to take blood transfusion virtually each and every month. Sadly, this repeated blood transfusion ends up in a number of headaches, but even so hanging the kid vulnerable to contracting other fatal infections.


"Bone marrow transplant is a miraculous resolution where in a bone marrow both from a matched sibling or a father or mother is given to the kid and the affected person does no longer require to any extent further transfusion and gets cured," she said.


Stating that successful bone marrow transplant rates are low in the country due to lack of good enough consciousness, she added, "A lot of effort is going into educating public, working blood donation programmes as well as getting ready these youngsters in probably the most optimal method for receiving the transplant. These are performed in the day care centres of the NGO. Once the kids are ready for transplant, they arrive to our health center and get the transplant performed at freed from price or at a subsidised price."
