Draft NRC must be error-free, indigenous bodies demand

GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students' Union (Aasu) and 28 other indigenous organizations of the state staged a protest in front of Raj Bhavan, challenging an error-free draft National Register of Citizens (NRC), which will be published in December.

"Aasu and 28 other organizations welcome the move to update the NRC under the watchfulness of the Supreme Court and appeal to the apex court to continue its observance. Assam must get an NRC that is free of illegal immigrants. An updated NRC will be the ultimate shied for the state's indigenous people, who are facing an identity crisis due to unabated influx," Aasu president Dipanka Kumar Nath and common secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said.

With the date of publication drawing near, the state govt has sought central paramilitary forces to test any "backlash" that may happen as a fallout. While indigenous organizations had been involved concerning the inclusion of illegal migrants from Bangladesh, minority communities fear they may be excluded from the NRC despite being citizens.

Earlier this month, for example, a retired Army jawan who had served for 30 years, was once summoned by way of the Foreigners' Tribunal to prove his citizenship.

In a statement, the main scholars' group of the state said that the issue of decadeslong illegal immigrants will have to agree to Assam Accord signed between Aasu, the now-defunct All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad, the Centre and the state govt on August 15, 1985 after the anti-foreigner motion in Assam from 1979 to 1985.

Apex tribal group, the All Assam Tribal Sangha, extended its support to the motion for an error-free NRC. The protesting organizations despatched a memorandum to Assam governor Jagdish Mukhi challenging clean conduct of the continuing verification procedure for an up to date NRC.
