Air quality ‘very poor’, building sites on radar

GURGAON: The town's air high quality remained on the "very poor" level for the closing two days, prompting the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) to step up efforts to put in force graded pollution-control measures across Gurgaon.

The air high quality index (AQI) read 318 on Wednesday, a couple of notches up from 315 on Tuesday. The AQI was once reported to be 256 and 285 on Monday and Sunday, respectively. On the other hand, the very best level of PM2.5 was once recorded 147.60g/m³ on Wednesday, expanding from 140g/m³ on Tuesday. The PM2.5 level remained 96.05g/m³ on Monday and 113.67g/m³ on Sunday. According to the ideas, PM2.5 ranges between 121g/m³ and 250g/m³ are regarded as to be 'very deficient'.

With the pollutants ranges refusing to return down, HSPCB claimed to have sped up the method to put in force Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), wearing out inspection of development sites and different polluting unites around the town. The board inspected over 80 development sites to test over the past few weeks and slapped show-cause notices on two builders for violating development norms.

"We have accelerated the inspection process. So far, we have inspected over 80 construction sites. Though no crop burning has been reported in Gurgaon, at least 10 cases of crop burning were reported in Palwal alone last week," stated Jai Bhagwan, regional officer, HSPCB. "We are working on a comprehensive awareness programme," he added.

Experts, however, alleged that the authorities involved had not been taking all the vital steps.

"Diesel gensets and diesel autos are major contributors to the air pollution in Gurgaon. However, no measure has been taken to improve the power infrastructure and strengthen public transport system in order to reduce the usage of diesel gensets and diesel autos," stated Niranjan Raje, former member of EPCA.
