Protest brews over NGT order to shift landfill to Sector 123

NOIDA: The National Green Tribunal's directive to Noida Authority on Tuesday to set up a purposeful waste-to-energy plant in Sector 123 has stirred a hornest's nest with residents of within sight spaces threatening a mass agitation in opposition to the plant.

"The waste-to-energy plant will not only be hazardous to the over 20,000 families in sectors 117 to 122, but will also be a threat to birds and animals, apart from causing more air pollution and ground water contamination in the area. How can a waste project be set up in such a densely populated residential area?," asked a resident of Gaur Grandeur apartment sin Sector 119.

The inexperienced panel had directed the Authority to build the waste-to-energy plant in Sector 123 inside six months and subsequently shift all dumped garbage from a vacant plot in Sector 138A — which can be affecting the residents of neighbouring Sector 137 — to the brand new plant.

While the residents have already taken to Twitter and Facebook, even tagging chief minister Yogi Adityanath, the RWA federation has made up our minds to take in the topic with the Noida Authority.

"It is a surprise that the NGT has ordered shifting of dumping ground from one residential area (Sector 138A) to another (Sector 123), which is near the densely populated sectors of 117 to 122," said Taran Dhingra, a resident of Homes 121, who had acquired a stay order from NGT on October 23, 2013 in opposition to any waste dumping in Sector 123.

"As according to the NGT order in 2013, Sector 123 cannot be used for dumping trash or setting up a plant till the time Noida Authority complies with municipal forged waste control (MSW) regulations and receives all required approvals. Subsequently, on September 14, 2014, Noida Authority had also responded to my RTI query on dumpyard and admitted that Sector 123 cannot be used for a landfill on environmental flooring.

"Then how come NGT has given this verdict on Tuesday. It seems Noida Authority has concealed details from NGT whilst it accelerates the process of setting up a waste remedy/waste-to-energy plant at Sector 123. It is a large shock for us," said Dhingra.

According to Dhingra, the earmarked web site for the plant at Sector 123 is simply 175.25 metres from Homes 121.

It may be handiest 136 metres from Garhi Chaukhandi village as according to web site inspection file done on May 25, 2013 and submitted in NGT by means of native commissioner. "This is clear violation of municipal forged waste control (MSW) regulations which obviously states that for this sort of waste/remedy web site to return up, it must be minimum 200 metres clear of residential spaces," said Dhingra.

Also, the Noida Authority can't construct a dumping flooring on a location subsequent to Hindon river bed, he added.

"We won't let Noida Authority construct any waste plant or sell off trash here because it affects the lives of a minimum of 50,000 families living within the vicinity," said Tito Yadav, a resident of Parthala village near Sector 122.

Rahul Singhal, a resident of Eldeco Amantran, Sector 119, said: "They are doing this after being turned away by means of Sector 137 residents. The residents of sectors 121 and 119 had were given a stay in opposition to waste dumping from NGT earlier, but it sort of feels the Noida Authority has convinced NGT in opposition to it. The lives of just about 20,000 families are at stake now, and we will not allow this to occur," said Singhal.
