Governor opens 48th annual ceremony of Rajgir stupa

RAJGIR: Amid chants of 'Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō', Bihar governor Satya Pal Malik opened the 48th annual rite of the World Peace Pagoda (Vishwa Shanti Stupa) atop the Ratnagiri Hills in Rajgir on Wednesday.


The governor, who was the manager visitor of the function, recalled that the foundation stone of the stupa at Rajgir was laid by President S Radhakrishnan in 1965 and was inaugurated by the then President V V Giri on October 25, 1969. He mentioned, "One of the 80 peace pagodas in the world, the Rajgir stupa was built to spread the message of peace and denounce violence."


Buddhist clergymen and devotees from several South East Asian countries also attended the function by which leader monk of the Nipponzan Myohoji sect (Japan Buddha Sangha), Ven S Shugei, led the peace prayers. "The most recognizable achievement of our religious movement, founded by Nichidatsu Fujii in 1917, is the peace pagoda. Hundreds of blessed devotees from across the globe visit the Rajgir peace pagoda every year," the manager monk mentioned.


State rural development minister Shravan Kumar and tourism minister Pramod Kumar, who also attended the annual rite, mentioned the government was committed to the improvement of puts associated with Lord Buddha and a lot of work on this regard had already been finished. "Rajgir has developed as one of the most important tourist spots in the country over the years," they added.
