Sohna residents spot leopard twice, claim pets missing

GURGAON: Panic gripped Sohna on Saturday after some residents claimed to have spotted a leopard twice near Sohna Tourist Complex overdue in the night time.

"We saw a big cat near the hills. In the last 15 days, two goats and a pet dog have gone missing from the area. We are sure a leopard is roaming near human settlements and attacking our animals. We are extremely worried about our safety," said Shankar Kumar, a resident of Sohna.

Sources in the wooded area department instructed TOI that the leopard scare has existed since October nine, when a leopard was first sighted in Thakur Mohalla, a neighbourhood with reference to Sohna Tourism Complex. "The area lies very close to the Aravalis, which is a leopard habitat. Sighting of leopard can't be denied as some residents made a video clip of the big cat near the Aravalis on October 9. As it is a hilly terrain, no pug marks were found," said a wooded area legit.

Meanwhile, residents have requested the wildlife department to increase their vigil in the space. "So far, the wildlife department and police have been very supportive. However, we feel there is need for more monitoring by wildlife guards. We request the authorities to increase vigilance in this area as we don't want any untoward incident to take place," said Mangla Devi, an elderly resident of the world.

Vinod Kumar, conservator of wooded area (wildlife), Gurgaon circle, instructed TOI, "We always send our team as soon as we receive any report of leopard sighting, to save the animal and prevent any man-animal conflict. However, in this area, the leopard seems to have returned to the forest. The Aravalis around this area definitely has around 20 leopards. Maybe the big cats are venturing into human habitation in search of food. We need to protect the Aravalis so that the entire ecosystem flourishes."

This is the 3rd leopard sighting in October. On October five, a leopard entered Maruti's Manesar plant and was effectively rescued after 36 hours.
