HYDERABAD: Dashing hopes of Telangana over the Nagarjunasagar reservoir touching the overall reservoir stage (FRL), Andhra Pradesh irrigation officers have closed the gates of Srisailam reservoir. With decreased inflows to the reservoir from the upstream, all gates of Srisailam have been closed on Thursday. As a end result, the water stage at Nagarjunasagar remains at 570 feet, simply 20 feet below the overall reservoir stage of 590 feet. The dam needs some other 60 tmcft water to achieve the overall reservoir stage. Telangana govt had hoped that when 2014, Nagarjunasagar dam would contact the overall reservoir stage this 12 months, after a gap of three years. However, that might not occur.
"We have closed all the gates of Srisailam as the inflows from Jurala and Narayanpur dams have come down drastically. We are now receiving less than 50,000 cusecs into the project and discharging about 73,000 cusecs through the power generation," mentioned Andhra Pradesh irrigation officers.
Nagarjunasagar dam already has 256 tmcft of water and some other 60 tmcft of water would have ensured that there is sufficient water to handle the drinking water and irrigation needs of Hyderabad and Nalgonda districts for the following two years. Officials mentioned that of the present storage capability of the dam, 200 tmcft of water would be utilised for the irrigation needs and 50 tmcft for the drinking water necessities of the Hyderabad town.
"The FRL at Nagarjunasagar will be a confidence booster. We are confident that in the next ten days, the reservoir would touch the FRL and we would start releasing the water to the left bank ayacut for the rabi season," mentioned Telangana irrigation officers. Telangana has determined to supply adequate water for irrigation needs within the coming rabi season, which starts in January, by means of utilising copious inflows into the Srisailam and Nagarjunsagar reservoirs. It has already made plans to divert the water to Udayasamudram in Nalgonda district to fill the tanks en course as a way to spice up the groundwater desk.
Due to water scarcity, the full acreage of farming has come down drastically within the ongoing kharif season below the catchment area of the Nagarjunasagar Left Bank Canal. To provide aid to the farmers, the TRS govt has promised sufficient water supply within the rabi season.
