Youngsters use mannequin challenge for dengue awareness

Coimbatore: While a debate is raging over the efficacy of nilavembu kudineer in treating dengue, an innovative pressure launched through a group of city-based youngsters to promote using the natural concoction among children in slum areas is going viral on social media.

The group is using the mannequin challenge to inspire children gulp down the bitter juice. The idea struck him all through a seek advice from to a slum, seeking to create consciousness on dengue and sanitation, says the brain behind the initiative, Ashok Srinithi.

Ashok had teamed up with buddies Shiva and Gautham to decorate the lives of slum children. "We visited slum areas at Ganapathy, Peelamedu, Avarampalayam, 100-Feet Road and Trichy Road, and met more than 100 families. We gave the concoction to 500 slum dwellers within five days. While older people were aware of the disease, we wanted to educate the children about it," says the youngster, who may be a functionary of Pattali Makkal Katchi.


Understandably, children were not that keen to drink the bitter natural combine. "We asked the children to freeze and after the video was shot, they were asked to gulp down nilavembu kudineer, which they happily did. The video has already gone viral," Ashok says.


"We found the slum areas stinking and there was water logging everywhere. Worms and mosquito larvae were thriving in the drains located close to homes. We asked the dwellers to keep their surroundings clean. City corporation officials also conducted mass-clean up drives in the areas after we informed them," he stated.


The crew even controlled to rope in main jewellery outlet within the city and talented the children new clothes, stationery items, chocolates and crackers all through Diwali.
