Administration open to feedback sessions, promises support to ‘car-free’ week

GURUGRAM: Vinay Pratap Singh, the younger IAS officer entrusted with town's governance as its deputy commissioner, has prolonged a hand of give a boost to to the crowd of Gurugrammers who've decided to move 'car-free' this week. He said on Sunday it used to be an initiative the management liked, showing sensitivity against a reason the federal government is regularly accused of prevaricating on.

"It is a good initiative by corporates and NGOs to put emphasis and focus on non-motorised transport, pedestrians and use of public transport to reduce pollution and traffic congestion on roads. The district administration appreciates the initiative and is willing to support the cause," he instructed TOI on Sunday.

Singh said he used to be open to discussions with electorate to deal with issues they face right through the 'car-free challenge'. "The initiative will help us know about problems faced by pedestrians and cyclists on the road. We will have a discussion and try to address the issues and support them in any manner possible," he said.


MCG leader V Umashankar, alternatively, puzzled if this used to be the appropriate time for a 'car-free' initiative, although he said he liked the purpose. "Going car-free is definitely a good step. However, such initiatives should be taken once we have good public transport. Good public transport is the need of the hour as there is a lot of concern over air pollution," he said.


Talking in regards to the MCG's plan to fortify infrastructure for non-motorised transport, Shankar said, "We are planning a lot of things to improve the state of public transport. The city will have a new fleet of buses by March 2018. We are in talks with a private company to roll out a bicycle-on-rent initiative. People will be able to book a bicycle online like they book a taxi. Right now, we are identifying space to make bicycle stands. This project might take a couple of months. Besides, we are encouraging our employees to use electric vehicles in order to motivate people to use electric vehicle."


Asked in regards to the absence of streetlights on main stretches that poses a significant challenge for pedestrians and cyclists, Umashankar claimed town can be smartly lit by means of June 2018. "We are already working in this area. We have identified a few dark spots and have started putting streetlights in some areas in Old Gurgaon. Also, we are replacing existing bulbs with better tube lights," he said.
