Another Assam armyman told to prove citizenship

GUWAHATI: An armyman from Assam, who served as a havildar for 18 years, and his wife were asked to prove their citizenship by way of a foreigners' tribunal in Barpeta district of the state.

Mahiruddin Ahmed (53), who retired from the Indian Army in 2004, and his wife, Husniara, have been served notices by way of the tribunal on September 16 announcing that both of them entered India after March 25, 1971, without any legitimate papers. He has been asked to seem in court docket on November 6.

"This is pretty unfortunate after you devote your life for the nation. I would describe it as harassment. No one in my family has ever got such a notice," a surprised Ahmed told TOI.

Last month, Azmal Haque, a junior commissioned officer (JCO) of the army, suffered a similar destiny at Chaygaon in Assam's Kamrup district. Later, Assam DGP Mukesh Sahay had stated that it was once a case of wrong identity.
