GURUGRAM: There is no dedicated counsellor in the district kid welfare division to take care of juvenile survivors of sexual or other forms of abuses, an RTI petition has published.
The earlier counsellor, Dharmendra Singh, who used to help both woman and boy survivors, relinquished the put up around eight months ago. Since, the dept has failed to rent someone to replace Singh.
At least 100 cases, together with the ones of sexual abuses dedicated against kid victims, have been registered in the district to this point (until October) this 12 months. And keep in mind that, in these kinds of cases, there used to be no counsellor to appease the frayed nerves of the minor survivors. Last 12 months, 128 such cases have been registered in Gurgaon.
Even the previous counsellor, Dharmendra Singh, used to be now not qualified sufficient to take care of kid psychology and similar problems.
"The previous counsellor was a master of social work, and not a trained psychologist. Despite being a male, he would counsel minor girl victims too even in POCSO cases," mentioned Aseem Takyar, an RTI activist who had filed the plea.
"The situation is really grim. In fact, for some time now, we have been managing with secretarial staff, who are not professionally trained for the task," a senior official from the child welfare division instructed TOI.
The administration's apathy is additional mirrored in the fact that there is no said criterion until date to nominate a counsellor.
When contacted, Shakuntala Dhull, chairperson, the child welfare committee, Gurgaon, mentioned, "We have asked for a female counsellor and hopefully, we will get a qualified one soon."
Asked about the variety criteria, Sunita Sharma, district ladies and kid development officer, mentioned, "Only those who have at least 5 years of experience in handling child-related issues should be hired. A female counsellor is preferred, especially in case of a girl victim because she makes the child more comfortable."
But why a counsellor is vital?
"Whenever there is a crime, there is a huge level of stress and trauma. As we grow older, our tolerance level or ability to cope with stress increases. But when a child is abused, he develops a severe stress and trauma. That stress can only be released through proper counselling. Unable to express, a child can face major psychological issues later in life. Thus, it is extremely important to counsel a traumatised child," mentioned Dr Jyoti Kapoor, psychiatrist, Paras Hospitals Gurgaon.
