Rebel activity alert in Bodoland Territorial Area Districts

GUWAHATI: Following experiences of a gaggle of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit) militants having crossed over into the state, Assam Police have sounded high alert within the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD).

The staff, comprising 11 contributors, reportedly entered the state a fortnight in the past by the use of Nagaland after crossing the world border from Myanmar. "Seven of them have already been arrested. A search is on for the rest. Police in Chirang and Kokrajhar districts have been alerted," ADGP (special branch) Pallav Bhattacharya mentioned.

The staff was once sent right here to support the group performing under the leadership of 'military chief' G Bidai. Top leaders of NDFB (S), together with Bidai and his deputy Ok Batha, have evaded seize and are believed to be hiding in dense jungles along the India-Bhutan border.

Bidai and Batha, believed to be responsible for a number of massacres within the region - together with the 2014 killing of adivasi villagers, are a number of the maximum sought after militants within the region and any details about them carries money rewards of Rs five lakh.

"The unrelenting counter-insurgency operations have hurt them. The group that crossed over recently was sent to strengthen the group operating under Bidai," Bhattacharya mentioned.

A document by the Union home ministry had pegged the collection of militant arrests within the state since the 2014 killings till December 2016 at 1,012.

"Out of the total militants arrested, at least 873 belonged to NDFB (S)," the document stated.
