Ruckus continues in the Odisha assembly over farmers’ issues

BHUBANESWAR: The state assembly went without any business for the second one straight day on Wednesday over the issues of minimum give a boost to worth (MSP) of paddy and farmers' plight.

The opposition Congress and BJP MLAs started sloganeering within the well of the home as soon because the day begun that forced speaker P Okay Amat to adjourn the home inside of a few seconds till 3pm.

"The MSP of paddy fixed by the Centre is not commensurate with the rising costs of inputs for agricultural operations as a result of which farmers of our state are deprived of getting a reasonable price for their produce. We demand to increase the MSP to Rs 2930 per quintal as passed in a unanimous resolution in the state assembly," meals provides and client welfare minister Surya Narayan Patro informed reporters.

Patro said since Prime Minister did not give appointment to an assembly panel to discuss the MSP issue, they've submitted a memorandum to the President of India during the governor to pressurize the Prime Minister.


As the home reassembled at three pm, the Congress and BJP MLAs staged a walkout accusing that they weren't allowed to talk in the home. Subsequently, the speaker adjourned the home for the day.


Leader of opposition Narasingha Mishra lashed out on the state govt as he was no longer allowed to talk inside the home. "The motion moved by the Congress on farmers' issue could not be discussed in the assembly and the valuable time of the house was wasted. There was practically no business taken up on initial days of the winter session," Mishra said.


BJP MLA Pradip Purohit additionally accused the state govt of no longer having the guts to stand the opposition on farmers' issue. "Since they have failed to protect the farmers' interest, the BJD is trying to avoid the discussion," Purohit said challenging an all-party assembly to revive normalcy in the home.


In the evening, the speaker held assembly of the home committee on MSP to discuss its future course of action. Briefing reporters after the assembly, govt chief whip Amar Prasad Satpathy said whatever choices taken within the previous conferences of the committee would be positioned within the assembly.
