Shaktikanta Das appointed as India's G20 Sherpa

NEW DELHI: Shaktikanta Das, former secretary of Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), has been appointed as India's G20 Sherpa until December 31, 2018 for the Development Track of the grouping, the Ministry of Finance stated in a notification.

There are two tracks in G 20 - Finance Track and Development Track. Finance Track is managed via the Secretary (Economic Affairs) as India's Deputy to G20 and the Development Track is coordinated via the Sherpa. The Department of Economic Affairs will provide essential enhance to the Sherpa.

Former vice-chairman of NITI Aayog Arvind Panagariya had previous steered Prime Minister Narendra Modi to appoint a full-time Sherpa for G20 talks as India's function is increasing in the international arena.

Panagariya left the federal government suppose tank on August 31 and returned to Columbia University. He used to be appointed India's Sherpa for G20 talks in September 2015, replacing Suresh Prabhu.


Sherpas, who're representatives of leaders of G20 member countries, coordinate on the schedule of the summit.
