Tea Board headquarters should be shifted to Guwahati from Kolkata: Minister Atul Bora

GOLAGHAT: Agriculture minister Atul Bora said he would take in with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare tea as a countrywide drink, which he feels will assist in the growth of the beverage's demand in the country and consequently propel manufacturing.

We will write to the Prime Minister to declare tea because the national drink of India," Bora said at the biennial basic meeting of North Eastern Tea Association (NETA) right here on Saturday.

Assam, which contributes about 53% of India's total tea manufacturing, has already declared tea because the state drink.

"Bora also said that as Assam produces greatest amount of tea there is no explanation why for Tea Board of India (TBI)'s headquarters to be based totally in Kolkata. Bora said that he's going to soon write to the Centre for moving the TBI office from Kolkata to Guwahati, arguing that the board can execute its activities for the betterment of tea growers in the state extra effectively. "Shifting of Tea Board headquarters from Kolkata to Assam is a long pending demand of the people of Assam. It should be shifted without any further delay," Bora said.

He said that there are five statutory commodity boards underneath the department of commerce- tea, espresso, rubber, spices and tobacco.


"Except Tea Board, all other boards are headquartered in the state where the product is mainly grown. Karnataka is the birthplace of coffee in India and coffee Board is headquartered in Bengaluru. Likewise Rubber cultivation in India has been traditionally confined to Tamil Nadu and Kerala. So rubber board is headquartered in Kottayam, Kerala," Bora argued.


Similarly, he said spices board and tobacco are headquartered in Cochin (Kerala) and Guntur (Andhra Pradesh) respectively.


Though Assam is the birthplace of tea in India and the state by myself produces about 53% of the rustic's total tea. Bt still the Tea Board has no longer been headquartered in Assam," Bora added.


NETA has also been demanding moving of the TBI from Kolkata to Guwahati. Earlier industries minister Chandra Mohan Patowary also raised the similar demand.
