UGC seeks report on ragging from IIT-K

KANPUR: Taking cognizance of a contemporary case of ragging in IIT-Kanpur that led to suspension of 22 BTech scholars, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has sought a report from the institute as well as the district authorities. The commission has registered a complaint in this regard and sent understand to the intitute's anti-ragging committee having DM, SSP and IIT-K director as its contributors. The committee has conducted a meeting and is making ready a report to be sent to the UGC.


The IIT management had suspended 22 BTech 2d 12 months scholars on September 21 on fees of ragging first 12 months scholars on August 19 and 20. The fees were proved throughout an inquiry conducted via a nine-member probe panel that incorporated five school contributors and 4 scholars.

He said that the institute had submitted an action taken report to the anti-ragging committee quickly after the scholars' suspension. "Now, as the UGC has sought a report from the anti-ragging committee, a meeting has been held and the report is being prepared," he added.


In August, about 50 first 12 months scholars had charged 2d 12 months scholars with ragging and other objectionable acts. Since it was a mass-ragging case, IIT authorities had swung into action and suspended 22 scholars discovered accountable via a probe panel.
