Robbed of valuables on train, woman chases thief

Hubballi: U R Arathi, a passenger on the Rani Chennamma Express used to be robbed on Tuesday night time. When she raised an alarm, co-passengers stopped the teach and she chased the thief however he slipped away on the railway yard close to Hubballi station.

The thief fled along with her jewellary, mobile, watches and money, all worth Rs 1.37 lakh. When Arathi, who used to be in S-6 coach, and her co-passengers insisted on submitting a First Investigation Report, the teach used to be detained at FCI Godown close to Mantur Road and it used to be sooner or later delayed via 1 hour, 30 minutes. Arathi, 45, a resident of Angol, Belagavi, stated she used to be travelling along with her mother Chandramma, 80, daughter U Nandini, 17, and son U Shravan, four.

She stated, "The train was delayed by 45 minutes when we boarded at Belagavi. We were going to attend a cousin's marriage in Tumakuru and carrying golden rings and jewellery. When the train left Hubballi at 11.25pm, I closed the door as I had not seen any security personnel. When the train was near the yard at Hubballi station, I got ready to sleep on the middle berth, holding my son with one hand and a purse with the other."

She added, "A person came near me and snatched my purse. I chased him and he jumped off the slow-moving train. When I shouted, co-passengers pulled the chain. I chased him in the darkness and got some minor injuries on the legs. Two security personnel, who were walking by, warned me not to risk my life. The thief rushed into the nearby shrubs and disappeared."


Her mother Chandramma stated they clueless what to do. "The TTEs and train staff extended their moral support and informed their bosses immediately," she added.


Devendra Kecnhagondanavar from Mundagod, a co-passenger, used to be surprised to understand there used to be no security body of workers on the coaches. "Whenever, such incidents happen, the Railways talks about security measures but forgets it later. If they're facing a shortage of personnel, they should talk about it."


"A case was registered under Section 379 of the IPC on the spot. We provided security to passengers till Haveri. As we have only 12 personnel, we cannot provide personnel on all trains passing through Hubballi. It's the Railways' responsibility to escort trains using RPF personnel," stated B B Patil, DSP, government Railway Police, Hubballi.
