Water quality falling sharply in Odisha rivers

BHUBANESWAR: Water high quality has been falling sharply across main river systems within the state. Of the 129 water high quality monitoring stations in 11 rivers, water used to be discovered undeserving for human use at 93 puts.

Twenty-one high quality measuring points — the place water used to be fit to be eaten till final 12 months — recorded excessive air pollution point making them undeserving for human use in checks executed during April-October this 12 months, reveals written reply submitted by means of woodland and environment minister Bijayshree Routray within the meeting on Tuesday.

The Daya river passing through Bhubaneswar has been discovered flawed to be used at all of the four puts the place review had been executed. Most of the rivers in Odisha are designated 'Class C' river (rivers are classified A to E), which means that its water can be used for consuming after remedy followed by means of disinfection. However, the latest review discovered Daya has upper point of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), an index to evaluate unhealthy effect of discharged wastewater on environment, and general coliform, micro organism found in faeces, compared to the best limit allowed for Class C rivers.

The Daya originates as a department of Kuakhai at Saradeipur in Khurda district. It flows through Khurda and Puri sooner than merging within the Chilika. It used to be undeserving for human use at one monitoring station in 2000 and two in 2009, which rose to all four this 12 months.

Taking serious observe of Daya's worsening fate, income and crisis management minister Maheswar Mohanty chaired a high-level assembly on Tuesday. "An expert team will assess the situation and suggest remedial measures within 15 days," Mohanty said after the assembly. Mohanty said bore-wells can be dug to make sure villages situated on Daya banks don't rely on the polluted river water.

Gangua, which carries water from nine of the 10 natural drainage channels of Bhubaneswar, used to be discovered undeserving to be used at all its four monitoring points this 12 months. Among others Kushabhadra river at Nimapara and Gop, Mahanadi branches Bhargavi, Mangala, Nuna, Badasankha, Sabulia, Ratnachira, Brahmani river's branches Gurdih, Badajor, Bangurunallah and Bangurusingada jhor, amongst others, had been known non-conforming to air pollution norms this 12 months.

An official of Odisha State Pollution Control Board said most of the rivers are shedding their high quality to untreated waste water from towns discharged to them but even so positive industries. Ranjan Panda, who fights for water conservation, said the government has not been taking any initiative to check air pollution within the rivers. "Everywhere untreated waste water is being allowed to enter rivers. This has to stop if rivers have to be saved," Panda said.

Forest and environment minister Bijayshree Routray said the Odisha Water Supply and Sewerage Board is imposing collection of projects to scale back river water air pollution. Seven sewer water remedy crops (STPs) are underneath quite a lot of stages of construction: one each and every in Sambalpur and Talcher and two each and every in Cuttack and Rourkela to scale back air pollution in Mahanadi and Brahmani, he said. Similarly, work will soon be taken up for construction of five extra STPs in Bhubaneswar to check air pollution in Kuakhai and Daya, the minister said.
