GURGAON: Over 150 trees on an one-and-a-half acre plot close to Ghata-Gwal Pahari junction along the Gurgaon-Faridabad Road were reduce on Thursday to set up a shop for promoting building material, regardless of a ban on non-forest activity within the ecologically fragile Aravalis.
No non-forest activity is authorized on the land in question as it's protected underneath Section 4 & 5 of Punjab Land Preservation Act. Environmentalist Vaishali Rana Chandra who lives close by spotted encroachers removing trees from the web page on Friday and knowledgeable the district wooded area department.

"While the tree felling took place on Thursday, the construction material was brought on Friday. The entire work was done within 48 hours. However, we learned it was done by a property dealer to build a shop of construction material," stated a resident of a close-by colony who witnessed the tree felling.


Chandra alleged that rampant tree felling and encroachment on the Aravalis is happening unabated, regardless of environmentalists having approached the surroundings ministry to raise the will to protect the Aravalis.


She added, "We have written to Haryana CM and met Union environment minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Thursday, demanding protection of the Aravalis. However, the destruction continues."
