Burnt sugarcane not harvested, grower left in the lurch

Belagavi: Sugarcane farmers from Gokak taluk complained to the deputy commissioner on Thursday, accusing the tahsildar and sugar factories of unveiling negligence via now not dashing to the help of a grower whose produce was burnt due to a short circuit.


Ratnappa Kallappa Goni, a sugarcane grower from Hulikatti village, had grown sugarcane on 18 acres of land. On November 28, sugarcane on 13 acres was burnt, allegedly due to a short circuit. According to government regulations, burnt sugarcane will have to be harvested inside of 24 hours. "But Doodahganga Sugar Factory in Chikkodi, which is near to us, has not come to harvest the sugarcane even though three days have passed. The tahsildar too has not inspected the field. If the produce is not harvested on time, we will incur Rs 10 lakh loss and will be left on the streets," Ratnappa instructed deputy commissioner S Ziyaullah, crying in front of the legit at his chamber.


The farmers, who accompanied him with burnt sugarcane sticks of their hands, recommended Ziyaullah to unravel the issue.


The DC spoke to the manufacturing unit control and officials over phone and looked after out the matter. "I have instructed the tahsildar to visit the field and inspect the sugarcane. The officials of Doodhganga Sugar Factory have promised to send three teams to harvest sugarcane," he said.
