‘Focus on value-added products from vegetables, coconuts’

Coimbatore: Ka Ilango, challenge coordinator, Supply Chain Management, Chennai, told farmers from the area that they must center of attention on generating value-added merchandise from vegetables and coconuts to increase their income.

He was once speaking at the state-level seminar on value-added merchandise on vegetables and neera, a drink tapped from inflorescence of coconut tree. More than 450 farmers from the area took part within the seminar at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) on Thursday.

The commissioner of agricultural marketing and agri industry, S J Chiru stated farmers can earn further source of revenue via generating neera and its value-added merchandise corresponding to coconut sugar, coconut honey and cookies.

"To reduce post-harvest losses, we have implemented the project 'Supply Chain Management', which will have farmer producer organisation, cold storage, terminal market complex, food park, drying units and other facilities. Modern technology to process coconut neera and its value added products in attractive consumer packs in all metropolitan cities in India will be provided. Farmers would fetch remunerative income through this," stated Chiru.

Ilango stated that they will proceed to have interaction with farmers and ensure there may be wisdom transfer and their ideas are taken up in implementing the challenge.


Several scientists from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore, organised various technical classes on good agricultural practices, provide chain management in vegetables and alternatives in agri industry for cost added vegetables and neera.


A primary processing centre for vegetables, especially gourds and banana, can be arrange at Sulur in Coimbatore. "A drying yard, farmer training centre, power house, fully automatic grading and sorting machines will be installed at the centre. A special centre for neera is also planned at Anamalai," stated an official.


This challenge is mainly for to cut back wastage of vegetables and fruit which is nearly 30% within the nation and better in Tamil Nadu. The govt has planned to arrange processing centres in 10 districts.
