COIMBATORE: Passengers in a the town bus escaped unharmed when the Kamarajar Road near Singanallur bus stand in Coimbatore caved in on Sunday morning.
The road was once dug up an afternoon ago to lay underground drainage pipe from Singanallur junction to Varadharajapuram Medu. The pipelines had been laid at night time and the dug up area was once covered with particles.
Around 11am on Sunday, the town bus (path quantity 105A) in which round 20 ESI personnel had been travelling began tilting in opposition to left after the street caved in. The driver and all passengers were given down instantly.
"The bus slowly tilted and everyone got worried as there was a huge pool of water and the road was caving in slowly. We informed the corporation officials and other engineers who reached the spot," said TNSTC official K Ravichandran.
He added that cranes had been pressed into provider. After two and a part hour effort, the bus was once pulled out. Meanwhile, another truck proper at the back of the bus also were given caught within the road and it was once also pulled out the usage of a crane.
"This is extremely dangerous. Corporation does all work overnight and in the morning, we are not aware of it. There were no any caution boards and barricades. It affected traffic for hour. It also put the lives of the public in danger," said Ravichandran.
A site engineer at the spot said they had been wearing out paintings handiest at night time as they didn't need traffic to be halted. "There is a borewell pipeline that is 200cm wide running under the road. We were not aware of it. That pipeline got damaged and the water began overflowing. This resulted in the road caving in," said the engineer.
Singanallur constituency MLA, N Karthik said the borewell pipeline was once laid greater than two decades ago to provide water to Government Polytechnic College from Singanallur lake. "There is no necessity for such a pipeline now as borewell can be dug at the college premises itself. I have already informed the higher officials and will write to the government to remove this pipeline and set up a borewell in the college," he said.
However, citizens within the area said the corporation officers had been smartly aware that heavy automobiles travelled on the road, particularly with a bus stand positioned on the road.
"Everywhere they have undertaken underground drainage work, the roads were not laid properly causing such cave-ins," said Kumar, a resident.
Eyewitnesses also said that they had been really scared to power on such roads. "Whenever roads are dug up, the corporation does not patch it up properly," said Ramesh, a passenger.
Corporation officers said that they had instructed the contractor to patch up the street and restoration paintings was once underway.
