DEHRADUN: Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is going to select 59 researchers to assist in assimilating and processing the information for all Indian tiger population estimation. In a web based exam which was held in all the 17 states having tiger reserves on Saturday, round 596 science graduates and post-graduated out of 728 registered gave the impression for the exams. Out of those 250 will be interviewed to select 59 finalists. National tiger census will get started on February 18.
Director WII, VB Mathur mentioned, "These 59 researchers will be provided training in the month of January and February in WII. They will be sent to the tiger reserve in their respective states from March for a period of nine months for collection of data. They will work with concerned forest officials and staff who are being provided training in these tiger reserve from this month onward."
He mentioned that the findings could be analysed from January 2019 onward and, the outcome is likely to be announced in June.
He mentioned that special efforts will be made to get a clear image of tiger population from tough terrains of North -east this time. In a first, complete estimation of Royal Bengal tigers in India , Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan will be carried out at the similar time, which might rule out possibility of duplication of data.
