Kamarajar Road caves in, traps govt bus in crater

Coimbatore: About 20 passengers on board a the city bus, on its way to Palladam, had a lucky get away on Sunday morning after Kamarajar Road opposite the Singanallur Bus Stand caved in, trapping the vehicle.
Bus no. 105A, which used to be sporting several ESI group of workers, used to be near the bus stand round 11am, when the front portion of the bus sunk. "The driver managed to get down from the bus and ensured that all the passengers got out. The pit had a pool of water into which the bus began to sunk. City corporation officials and engineers soon reached the spot," mentioned TNSTC Palladam manager K Ravichandran. The bus used to be pulled out of the pit after two-and-a-half-hour effort, using cranes. A truck, which used to be right behind the bus and had also got caught, used to be pulled out using a crane.

Kamarajar Road used to be dug up an afternoon ago to put underground drainage pipelines for one kilometre distance from Singanallur Junction to Varadharajapuram Medu. The pipelines were laid at night time and the dug up house used to be lined with debris. "It used to be extremely dangerous. We were not conscious about the paintings achieved by means of the corporation in a single day. There were neither any caution forums nor barricades. Not just did the incident affected traffic for hours, but also put the lives of public at risk,' Ravichandran advised TOI.

A web page engineer on the spot mentioned the paintings used to be performed at night time in order not to disrupt traffic. "There used to be a borewell water pipeline below the street, about which we were not conscious about. That pipeline developed a leak and water started to overflow. This resulted in the highway cave-in," the engineer mentioned.

Singanallur MLA N Karthik mentioned the borewell water pipeline used to be laid more than twenty years ago to provide water to the Government Polytechnic College from Singanallur Lake. "There isn't any necessity for this sort of pipeline now, as a borewell can also be dug on the college premises itself. I had informed senior officials about it and can write to the government to remove the pipeline and arrange a borewell in the college," he mentioned.

Meanwhile, citizens in the house mentioned the officials were well aware that heavy vehicles plied on the highway, especially with a bus stand located there. "They have undertaken underground drainage paintings everywhere. After the works, roads were not relaid correctly, causing such cave-ins," mentioned Kumar, a local resident. Eyewitnesses also mentioned that they were terrified of using via such roads. Corporation officials mentioned they have suggested the contractor to patch up the street.

Good Shed Road, Big Bazaar Street, Sowripalayam Road, R S Puram and different portions in the town had also caved in previously, elevating questions about the high quality of labor performed and highway safety.
