Police to trace Bengaluru operator

KANPUR: More than 48 hours after recovering over Rs 97 crore in demonetised forex notes and arresting 16 individuals, investigating companies, including Kanpur police, are clueless as to how the accused planned to exchange the outdated notes with new ones.

They have pinned their hopes on 'Hari Krishna' of Bengaluru, who, in step with those arrested, promised to exchange the demonetised forex at 40% in their face price. SP (east) Anurag Arya said on Thursday the police, after amassing concrete evidence towards the accused, would move court docket to seek their custody. The accused are in judicial custody until January 30. The key accused include Anand Khatri, a clothes trader and builder, besides Koteshwar Rao of Telangana, Sanjeev Agarwal of Kolkata (West Bengal) and Maneesh Agarwal of Howrah (West Bengal).


Arya said the case used to be "mysterious" for a number of reasons as none of the 16 accused have published the name of the person to whom they were supposed to deliver the outdated notes. A few among them said the cash used to be to be exchanged thru yet one more "big firm", but they've not named it but.


The investigators published they operated from six states - UP, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal and Karnataka.
